Virgin Cruise - Sydney-Burnie-Sydney

When Virgin Voyages (VV) brought one of it's new ships, The Resilient Lady, to Australia they offered various special deals for short cruises. So we jumped on board (so to say) and booked a 4 day cruise from Sydney to Burnie, Tasmania and back. We opted for one of their Rock Star Suites, for about $4000.

Thursday Feb 15
All on board at the Overseas Passenger Terminal. As Rock Stars we could board at 2pm which we did. We relaxed in the SIP bar for our welcome glass of Moet - which turned into a couple - we also met our Concierge (Anan) who would be on hand to assist us with anything we desired. We went to our suite around 4pm to find, to our surprise, our one suitcase had not arrived. We checked with the room attendant and Anan on where / when would be get our bag. To cut a long story short sometime after 5:00pm I made my way to "security" where they were holding our bag hostage claiming it has "sharp" items in it. On opening my bag for inspection - they objected to the MacBook charger which after a conniption fit they let me keep and also to a Swiss army knife which after inspection by a supervisor they also let me keep (as long as I did not take it our of our suite). Not a good start as I was totally furious by this time - and by the way we also boarded our Ponant ship in Dec with the same items with no issues. (VV confiscated thing like power boards from other passengers.).
Anyway after unpacking we headed up to Richards Lounge on Deck 16 (an area reserved for Rock Stars) of the 5-6pm Happy Hour where all beverages are complimentary. (In other bars and restaurants you must pay for your drinks). We had pre-booked dinner at Extra Virgin, the Italian restaurant and had a reasonable meal - say a 7 out of 10 - nothing to knock your socks off.

Friday Feb 16
We got up around 8am, slightly hung over, and could not figure out where to have breakfast - due to the late arrival of our luggage we had not really had time to explore the ship. On calling Customer Service we were advised that only 2 of the restaurants serve brunch (not breakfast) but they were fully booked for the entire 4 days - hum traps for young players. Nevertheless we tried a walk-in at The Wake at around 8am and were able to get in - as this is brunch most booking are for later in the morning (in fact you can book up until 1pm) - the menu of course was not traditional breakfast but we managed to order 2 egg dishes which were OK not particularly hot. By this time we had figured out there was a "food court" (aka The Galley) on deck 15 which we went to explore. The Galley is open from about 5am - 2am with many different stalls with various offerings depending on the time of day. It was a total zoo at 9:30am - we were a bit shocked - however as it came to pass, it wasn't all the bad - you could arrive at non-peak times and/or jockey for position.
After breakfast we tried to decide which activities we should try out - as this was one of the 2 sea days. On the VV you can see them all - many which require booking and some an additional charge. They ranged from fitness classes, to a variety of contests in the bars (themed trivial pursuit, jigsaw puzzles, and who know what else, live music) - we could not get too excited about any of them but spent the day checking things out and having lunch at the pizza venue (not part of The Galley and not one of the 5 restaurants) - it was mediocre.
We had happy hour (aka Moet Swill) fro 5-6pm then went of dinner at the modern Mexican restaurant - which was fine - another 7 out of 10. We opted for an early night and did not attend the Pyjama Party from 11pm.

Saturday Feb 17
We landed in Burnie, our only port of call - and fortunately it was a splendid day - we spent the day wandering around the town, visiting the local historical museum, and several street which have lovely heritage house - then a long walk along the sea-front ocean boardwalk - hope to many Fairy penguins which are only home at night. We had a "gourmet lunch' at the surf club - hot chips, a beer and a Diet Coke.
Back on board it was the 5-6pm Moet swill followed by dinner at The Wake, a steak and seafood restaurant - probably the best meal of the trip and the nicest venue. Later in the evening we attended a small audience invitation-only very funky magic show.

Sunday Feb 18
So out last sea day as we made our way back to Sydney - we had a new strategy for breakfast - we had an early light breakfast at the Galley then brunch at mid-day at Razzle Dazzle (a vegetation / vegan restaurant with some meal dishes) - our concierge had secured reservations for us. The brunch was fine. In the afternoon we tired to attend one of the live music hours in one of the bars but ti was SRO. So we kind of wandered around .... checking out various activities - the most popular ones being the pool and hot tubs. There was a nice walking track where we did a few laps.
Dinner was a repeat of the Mort swill then dinner at Razzle Dazzle (different menu) where we both has a lamb shank which was in fact very good. We were booked to attend a show at 10pm but by the time 10pm came around we decided we were too tired and hit the sack.

Monday Feb 19
Disembarkation was from 7:30am - we elected to carry our own luggage off and skip breakfast. Our backpack was very heavy since we cleared out our included mini-bar (which is permitted) - half-size bottles of various liquors, wine, beer and Champagne.
We had a nice relaxing brekkie at home - croissants !!!
